The Story of How I Learned to Care

This is my honest, sometimes messy story about failure, motherhood, medicine, and learning real, true compassion.

Hi, I'm Jan

I’m Jan DeBell Daniel, MSN, FNP-BC. I’ve spent more than thirty years caring for patients as a medical assistant, nurse, and nurse practitioner, and built my own primary care practice before moving into psychiatry. I’m also a mother, wife, entrepreneur, and inventor, and this book shares what shaped my life of care.

Chapter Summaries

Here’s a peek into some of the chapters the hard ones, the funny ones,
and the ones that changed everything.

01

Privilege and Pressure

Fifteen years old, homesick, and boarding just miles from my own house, my first real lesson in resilience.

03

Healing Hands

Cutting tissue in a hospital pathology lab taught me patience long before I ever became a nurse.

02

Freedom, Failure, and Finding My Way

College gave me freedom I’d never had, and I nearly wasted it, until one commercial changed my path.

04

Invention and Betrayal

I sewed a baby sling at my kitchen table to save lives. Then I watched big companies copy it.

About The Book

The Quiet Education of Care is a healthcare memoir about resilience and reinvention, growing up too fast, failing college, inventing something that mattered, losing my mother, and slowly becoming the nurse practitioner and person I was meant to be. Always honest, real.

Our Blogs

I write about the small moments, the mistakes, and the life lessons it took years to learn as a caregiver.
